INTERNSHIP ABROAD IN PRAGUE

Internships abroad became pretty much standard for most business degree courses. However, finding a good internship in a foreign country is not always easy.

Writing this article, we are biased and our intentions are twofold.

First, we want to give you a true and honest account of Deborah’s internship at Creative Dock. Second, we hope that you might choose to do the same and follow her footprints (and those of our previous interns, Sarah, Martin, Marc, Elena and Florian). So even though we have a vested interest to appear glorious, we did not alter the information here.

ENTER: DEBORAH

Deborah studies International Management at the ISM in Munich. She just finished the fifth semester of her Bachelor degree and took the winter break to fly out and gather fresh work experiences in a country notsofar from home, but still very different in many ways. It’s her seventh week at Creative Dock. The perfect time to hear how she is doing in our ‘organized chaos’.

DEBORAH! WHAT EXACTLY ARE YOU DOING AT CREATIVE DOCK?

I’m part of the Business Development team and support Carlos, the Head of the team, with acquiring new projects. As part of my work, I visit networking and business events, go to client meetings, and prepare presentations. I also help to manage Carlos’ professional network of over 5,000 people.

Last week, we closed a deal with a major energy provider. That was a great experience.

Due to my role, I see different aspects of Creative Dock. Also, I got my own project now. I contact European fashion brands to find out if we can help them innovate and design new digital services which combine fashion and technology and add real value to the customer. We believe this will be the future of fashion.

IS THERE A BIG DIFFERENCE BETWEEN WORKING IN GERMANY OR THE CZECH REPUBLIC?

I would not put it this way. I’d rather say there is a major difference between working for Creative Dock and most other ‘normal’ companies in the world.

HOW SO?

Well, Creative Dock is like a big family. People bring their dogs to the office, celebrate birthdays at work. There are talks and ski trips and beers and breakfasts and weekly updates with food and interesting presentations. It’s a really nice environment to work in but sometimes it´s also a bit challenging to stay focused on your own work and not being distracted by all the other things going on at Creative Dock. Let's call it organized chaosbut in a good way.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE THE MOST ABOUT CREATIVE DOCK?

I really like the work culture. Everybody is very open and nice. People take time to explain everything in detail. There is a true startup feeling; new projects takeoff on a weekly basis. The work environment is very dynamic and you can get insights into various projects and teams as the Creative Dock office is open space. So far, no two days have been alike for me and I really like that I can shape my own tasks according to my skills.

SO WHAT WAS THE BIGGEST ‘CULTURAL SHOCK’ AT WORK SO FAR?

For the most part, the job interviews prepared me well. But I really couldn't imagine that people can sit in one large open space with animals and sometimes babies and get stuff done while having all the fun in the meantime.

SO, HONESTLY, WOULD YOU RECOMMEND CREATIVE DOCK FOR AN INTERNSHIP?

I’m very happy with the internship. I´ve learnt a lot and I had the possibility to deepen my knowledge and skills in areas I am interested in as I got my own handson work responsibilities. From day one, I was seen as a full member of the team and I never did any typical “internship” work. Also, I got a lot of freedom in the way I approach my work and I get help whenever I need it.

So, yes, I would definitely recommend the internship!
